   Life at Abergowrie College

The College provides a unique rural environment where all boys are encouraged to participate in various activities ranging from sporting events to abseiling, fishing and camping on weekends. As a full boarding school we offer 24 hour care in a supervised, secure and safe environment where all students are valued and the Catholic ethos of the school is lived.

WorkshopThe full boarding nature of the College allows for weekly celebration of Mass and sacramental preparation. The whole school community actively celebrates liturgies as well as special days and occasions.

Due to the 24 hour nature of the College a counselling service is provided both by outside agencies and the College. A full-time Registered Nurse provides continuos medical care for all students as well as arranging for specialist care and appointments, while liaising with parents at all times.

ClassroomPeer support programmes are in place across the residences and College which allow for all students to become valued members of our ‘Gowrie Family’. Various staff visit home communities 4 times a year which also provides a valuable link with parents, teachers and residential staff and students

   Student Achievement

Success is celebrated in all arenas of the College, from National representatives in AFL, finalists in Lions Youth of the Year Public speaking contests, nationally recognised artists and apprentices and the overall recognition of the College placing in the Top Ten of Australia’s schools. Each year the retention rate of students increases as well as the successful employment and further education of graduating students. The ‘distance travelled’ by many of the students who are enrolled in year 8 and graduate in year twelve is remarkable.

ClassroomAll teaching staff as well as school officers have been trained in specialist literacy strategies to not only help those students who may struggle but to aide the students who need assistance in developing a fluent use of Standard Australian English.

Both Literacy and Numeracy are continuing areas of development and focus for all staff of the College. Vocational Education areas and recent changes made by Government bodies and the Queensland Studies Authority in the development of National testing and reaching set benchmarks is also a school priority. School structures have been recently modified to ensure that the curriculum at Abergowrie College is able to provide all students with up-to-date knowledge and opportunities to succeed in their education
